Shauna intends to explore secular law in the context of Christian teachings and vice versa, to examine closely what we have gained by separating church and state, and what we have lost; exploring the possibility of what it might mean if our secular laws touched more openly on the ethics of faith and our church canons respected the scholarship of judicial decision-making processes. To ask the big questions that lawyers are scared to ask, to use privilege as a tool for deconstruction, and to overturn the tables of injustice in both the secular law and in canon, with the goal to create rich, fertile ground in which we understand each other and know that we are not alone.

“I am a fierce, compassionate woman of faith.
I am a farmer’s daughter who holds the dichotomy of being profoundly formed by the resilience of farm life with the reality that my formation was a benefit I received from colonialism as descendant among Alberta’s first European settlers.
I am a Christian in a system built, in no small part, by doing ungodly acts in the name of Jesus.
I am an ally in de-colonization and fierce in creating safe spaces for people to be heard. I come to the table with privilege and blind spots.
I also come to the table with a fierce dedication to speak as truthfully as I can, with humour and vulnerability.
I lead from my experience, using my privilege and knowledge to dismantle dysfunctional structures and usher in a new kind of leadership: where we are governed by leaders who are accountable to the people they lead every day not just once every four years; where our leaders focus their energy on leading with integrity in a system that does not require out-funding or out-manoeuvering one another; and where leaders are responsible people of integrity in a system that lets them lead with integrity.
I do not always get it right. I expect to learn from you, whatever your faith (or non-faith) tradition, and look forward to mutual respect through your musings on mine. For I whole-heartedly believe that when I speak truth to power, I am empowered with a truth-filled voice to inspire healing and wholeness in others, and in Creation.”

The words we use matter. The intention we have when we gather matters. How we listen (or not) to each other matters.
Join us in creating a safe space and place where questions about all aspects of truth, power, and voice are welcome. Our collective expectation is that questions are asked out of curiosity and kindness. All people are welcome, with special and extended welcome to those who are marginalized in the secular world and in the church: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, non-binary, two-spirited folks. We work together to create a safe space and place for people of colour, declaring that Black Lives Matter and Indigenous Lives Matter. In this space, we set our intention to Truth and Reconciliation and a restoration of right relations.
In the To Seek Justice community, we give thanks for the First Nations peoples of the lands upon which I write who entered Treaty 6 in 1876 with purity and honesty, and in whose mighty footsteps we take the long road to justice together.
Join us, in healing the sins of the past for the generations yet to be. Let’s together acknowledge that most of us lie, work, and play on land that was colonized from First Nations, Inuit, and Metis people. We acknowledge we are immersed in conscious and subconscious patterns of racism, sexism, ableism, islamophobia, homophobia, and countless ways our systems abuse power and privilege.
In the To Seek Justice community, we strive to overcome those patterns. We are seekers who long to understand the root causes of injustice so that they may be transformed. In the To Seek Justice community, we speak truth to power and, in so doing, empower truth-filled voices to inspire healing and wholeness.
“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. If you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” – Lilla Watson
